The Dark, Mafia GameFLAVOUR:One day in a small Alaskan town, something changed. Phones cut to static; interference. TVs, radio, Wi-Fi – all down. Later, reports of road accidents came flooding into town. People going missing. Very quickly, a harrowing truth became all too apparent: everyone leaving the town was ending up dead.
Underground, fearing an inevitable CIA investigation, researchers scrambled to launch their cover-up plans. They had not foreseen an accident of this magnitude, but they had prepared for one. By the morning, an abandoned, barren lab facility was all that was discovered – no trace of evidence, no hint of culpability... The final touch: memory-altering drugs to ensure no details would be leaked, and that no-one would blab. After the crisis blows over, maybe the researchers would find a way to regroup, and the pioneering research could resume with redoubled caution.
Madness has descended upon the once-peaceful town. Suspicion of evil scientists, of government agents, of spies and of political treachery swirls through homes, hearts, and minds alike. A public outcry for retribution against those accountable rages, as well as a fervent desire just to make it through the other side of this chaos. Confusion reigns, in this sense a uniting force, beckoning to all to uncover the researchers’ dark secrets. @elysium5 (lynched D7, Researcher, Cinema Manager)@Ryomyr (killed N9, Neutral, Life Coach)@Rockbert (killed N6, Townie, Accountant)@ChipmunkWarrior (killed N2, Townie, Radio DJ)(resurrected D5, died D7, Townie, Radio DJ)@2ofclubs (lynched D8, Neutral, Forensic Investigator)@Hoodlum (lynched D3, CIA, Yoga Instructor)@Tennesseelogman (killed N3, Townie, Doctor)(resurrected D4, killed N7, Idealist, Doctor)@orzhovboss (killed N2, Townie, Tattoo Artist)@Madagascarter (lynched D1, Researcher, Librarian)@Abs (lynched D2, Researcher, Gardener)(resurrected D3, lynched D3, Researcher, Gardener)- @Anaxagore (lynched D5, Townie, Taxi Driver)(resurrected D6, ???, Taxi Driver)

Because this game has a unique format, I'm asking for
all players to confirm that they understand and will keep the following rules during the course of the game:
1. No outside communication.
Do not create any message threads to any other player involved in the game. Do not discuss the game outside of the forum thread.
I will create all necessary messaging threads. Editing posts or changing profile pictures and signatures is not allowed once the game has started.
2.
No copying/pasting (or reproducing in any other way)
messages from Virtuosity98. You may rephrase them, but no quoting. This is to avoid players being able to 'prove' their roles with undeniable evidence. Exception: quotation boxes starting with a puzzle piece symbol may be directly quoted:
3.
No posting if you are dead. There are lots of players and the thread needs to stay uncluttered.
No creating discussion threads for dead players - again I will take care of that (I have a themed welcoming message that I'm rather proud of
).
4. No inactivity. Minimalistic posting is a valid strategy, but in this game
all living players must at least submit a lynch vote during each Day phase. Lynch votes should be in the following formats:
#Lynch Virtuosity98,
#No Lynch, or #Abstain.
5. No bribing or betting. Every claim/alliance must bear equal weighting - words and honour will be your only bargaining chips!
Players in breach of these rules will be subject to penalties ranging from loss of night action to complete removal from the game, at my discretion. Game Mechanics:This is fundamentally a game of Mafia, with evil faction(s) and good faction(s) fighting for dominance, via Lynchings in the forums, nightkills at night via PMs, and other unique night actions via PMs. Notable mechanics that differ from other mafia games include Puzzle Pieces, Occupations, Locations, and more. Read on!
Puzzle Pieces are hints to be discovered throughout the game by individual players through their Night and Day actions. They will be received by PM from V98, and are the only text you are allowed to copy/paste/reproduce from your PM chats with V98.
Understanding Puzzle Pieces will be a key way to maximise your probability of meeting your win clause.
Occupations - every player will receive a Role PM detailing basic information about their character, followed by their Faction, Win Clause, Night/Day actions, and automatic abilities. Part of the basic information section will include one of the following Occupations:
Tattoo artist
Mailman
Forensic Investigator
Café Owner
Scientist
Cop
Builder
Investor
Radio DJ
Student
Life Coach
Salesman
Accountant
Librarian
Yoga Instructor
Doctor
Cinema Manager
Taxi Driver
Gardener
Governor
Each Night phase, each player must lock in their plans for the following Day phase, be it #VISIT [Occupation], #OPEN for business, or #RESEARCH. Of the 20 Occupations, only 10 may #OPEN for business (or in other words, only 10 Occupations may be #VISITED).
Occupation | Location | Reason to Visit: |
Mailman | ↔ Post office | ↔ Visitors may write a postcard to whoever they wish, to be delivered on a future Day. |
Forensic Investigator | ↔ Morgue | ↔ *wasn't opened D1/D2, benefit unknown* |
Café Owner | ↔ Café | ↔ all Visitors may chat freely together as a group. |
Scientist | ↔ Museum | ↔ Visitors are taught all about physics and natural sciences. Hopefully they will learn something. |
Radio DJ | ↔ Broadcast stn | ↔ Visitors may listen to whatever is being listened to. Hopefully they will learn something. |
Life Coach | ↔ Consultancy | ↔ Visitors are helped to increase their persuasiveness and influence in the future. |
Librarian | ↔ Library | ↔ Visitors may borrow a religious book, and read it at their leisure. Hopefully they will learn something. |
Yoga Instructor | ↔ Yoga studio | ↔ *wasn't opened D1/D2, benefit unknown* |
Doctor | ↔ Hospital | ↔ *wasn't opened D1/D2, benefit unknown* |
Cinema Manager | ↔ Cinema | ↔ Visitors watch a movie, selected by the Manager. Hopefully they will learn something. |
|
#VISITING Occupations may yield certain benefits, namely acquisition of knowledge specific to that Location, or benefitting from a service unique to that Location. The Owner would benefit too - it may be an anarchic society, but it's still a capitalistic anarchic society
If, however, the Owner did not choose to #OPEN for business, then your action would be wasted.
At the end of the Day phase, you will learn the identity of the Occupation you #VISITED - e.g. If Virtuosity98 #VISITED the mailman, and Fendi was the mailman, then Virtuosity98 would be told:
Finally,
Locations are simply the 10 visitable Occupations. If you find yourself alone with one other player in any given Location during the Day phase, V98 will create a PM chat between the two of you for that phase. Certain other actions may be Location-limited.
Clear as mud?
These things always seem complicated when written out all at once - perhaps you are still feeling a little in the Dark?
You'll get the hang of it within a few phases. Feel free to absolutely pepper me with questions!
Finally, some generic resources to help all factions play optimally:
You are a Townie. Your life has been messed up by this crisis. You are furious with anyone you can think to blame for the madness. All you want is your Town back, and to make those responsible pay.
Win clause: Eliminate all factions that do not care about the survival of the Town.
You are a Researcher. You remember nothing of your research project, nor of your associates. The CIA are out to kill you and steal your research. The Town is furious with anyone they can think to blame for the madness. Your objective is to survive and regroup, in order to continue your research once the crisis is over.
Win clause: ___________________________
You are a CIA agent. You have been sent here on a life-or-death mission: kill the Researchers, get to the bottom of this mystery, and get the info back to the government. Whatever power is behind this, it could alter the future of mankind. However, the Researchers were one step ahead of you and are doubtless plotting your demise. Moreover, the Town is furious with anyone they can think to blame for the madness.

In other news, many people stayed at home during the Day to #RESEARCH the mystery. They found that they couldn't learn much because they didn't have any Puzzle Pieces upon which to base their research... NEWS:The following businesses were #OPEN during Day 2:
