Welcome to the Battle of Berlin Mafia Game Thread! This post will outline the structure of this particular mafia game. The information in this post is crucial for understanding how to win and how to prevent others from winning - so read on!
(If you are new to mafia, or haven't played with us here on D12, please familiarise yourself with this thread.)Background:Germany, 1945. After 5 years of bitter warfare, it appears that the most destructive war in human history is drawing to a close. The German forces are retreating on all fronts, and a final showdown is brewing in the streets of Berlin. With Soviet hordes amassed in the East, and American and British forces congregating in the West, the situation looks dire for the Third Reich.
Scenario (not 100% historically accurate):Hitler, seeing his chances of victory reduced to nothing, decides to play a final gambit. He launches schemes to assassinate key political and military leaders of the Soviet Union and the Western Allies, in the hope that momentum can be swung back in his favour.
Meanwhile, deep mistrust is developing between Soviet and Western leaders, as well as an increasingly precarious post-war geopolitical climate. The capture of Berlin, and specifically by whom it is captured, could have far-reaching ramifications for European and global politics for the next 50 years…
To further complicate matters, rivalries within Soviet ranks and between American and British Generals, as well as conflicts of interest among their national leaders could cause violent schisms in these fraught alliances.
So, perhaps there is a glimmer of hope for a resurgence of the Third Reich after all… How will history play out?
Battle of Berlin:14 players
Third Reich (mafia) vs Soviet Union//Western Allies (split town)
IMPORTANT: all players have different (potentially unique) win clauses that reflect and incorporate each character's actual priorities regarding the end of WW2 and post-war Europe. Therefore, it is possible for some players in a faction to win, whilst others in the same faction might lose. Some players are able to win entirely alone.
The objective of this game is to obtain more Victory Points than any other player (maximum 3VP). Each Role PM will delineate the conditions upon which you will obtain these Victory Points.
Typically, Roles in the same faction share one or two win conditions, while another may differ.
These different win clauses culminate in 36 different possible endgames, each with its own set of victors. Often the factions share wins, but there is a great amount of scope for treachery
^ Sound complicated?
Just focus on getting your 3 Victory Points. If you can't get the third, often you can still win with 2 or even 1.
- there are 21 possible roles, of which 14 will be used.
- these Role PMs include only 2 Victory Point criteria, with the third remaining secret. They also do not necessarily include all night actions for each Role.
Adolf Hitler – Führer of the German Reich, and allied with the Third Reich. You cannot be lynched as long as Kaltenbrunner, Müller, Bormann or Weilding survives. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
Ernst Kaltenbrunner – Director of the Reich Main Security Office, and allied with the Third Reich. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
Heinrich Müller – Head of the Gestapo, and allied with the Third Reich. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
Martin Bormann – Reichsleiter and 2nd in command, and allied with the Third Reich. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
General Weilding – Commander of the Berlin Defence Area, and allied with the Third Reich. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
German Spy – Allied with the Third Reich. Each night, you may spy on a player to find out their allegiance. +2 Victory Points if all enemies of the Third Reich are killed.
Joseph Stalin – Leader of the Soviet Union, and allied with the Soviet Union. You cannot be lynched. +1 Victory Point if all allies of the Third Reich are killed. +1 Victory Point if an ally of the Soviet Union kills Hitler.
Marshal Zhukov – Marshal of the Soviet Union, and allied with the Soviet Union. Once during the game, you may kill one player during the night. +1 Victory Point if all allies of the Third Reich are killed. +1 Victory Point if an ally of the Soviet Union kills Hitler.
Marshal Konev – Marshal of the Soviet Union, and allied with the Soviet Union. Once during the game, you may kill one player during the night. +1 Victory Point if all allies of the Third Reich are killed. +1 Victory Point if an ally of the Soviet Union kills Hitler.

American Spy – Allied with the Western Allies. Each night, you may spy on a player to find out their allegiance. +2 Victory Points if all allies of the Third Reich are killed.

Field Marshal Alexander – Field Marshal in the British Army, and allied with the Western Allies. +1 Victory Point if all allies of the Third Reich are killed. +1 Victory Point if an ally of the Western Allies kills Hitler.
Field Marshal Montgomery – Field Marshal in the British Army, and allied with the Western Allies. +1 Victory Point if all allies of the Third Reich are killed. +1 Victory Point if an ally of the Western Allies kills Hitler.
British Spy – Allied with the Western Allies. Each night, you may spy on a player to find out their allegiance. +2 Victory Points if all allies of the Third Reich are killed.
French Spy – Allied with the Western Allies. Each night, you may spy on a player to find out their allegiance. +2 Victory Points if all allies of the Third Reich are killed.

Citizen of Berlin – Allied with no-one. Each night, you may claim allegiance with the Third Reich, the Soviet Union, or the Western Allies. If you are targeted by a spy, you will appear to them as an ally of that faction. +2 Victory Points if you survive until endgame.
^ Note: all political and military leaders of the same
nation will know each other from the beginning - they will be put into group chats.
Thematically, killing Hitler is equivalent to conquering Berlin (with all the prestige that accompanies it). A mafia night kill usually represents an assassination, a Soviet Union or Western Allies night kill represents an individual army night raid, and a lynching represents a coordinated military offensive involving multiple armies. As such, Stalin and Churchill cannot be lynched (they are in Moscow and London), and Hitler cannot be lynched if Kaltenbrunner, Müller, Bormann or Weilding is still alive (he is in his bunker).
Small Print1: All night actions are treated as simultaneous. If two players would kill each other simultaneously, a standoff occurs and neither player dies. If three or more players would kill each other in an A --> B --> C --> A scenario, no standoff occurs, and all are killed. If multiple players kill another player at the same time, then any Victory Points earned from the kill are shared equally between all killers (e.g. if Zhukov (Soviet Union) and Alexander (Western Allies) kill Hitler during the same night, all players who would receive 1VP for a Soviet killing Hitler would receive half a VP, and all players who receive 1VP for an Ally killing Hitler would receive half a VP). In other words, the credit for the kill is split, and so the Victory Points earned are split by the same ratio.Small Print2: Players still alive who can't obtain any further Victory Points will have their Night and Day actions cancelled if indeed there are no longer Victory Points to be gained or protected. As mod, I have complete discretion over this scenario, and will only use it to prevent game-breaking situations.Remember, the key is to get as many Victory Points as possible. Also remember that every Role represents a real historical person who had actual priorities for the end of the war and post-war Europe. With a little research, you might be able to guess what other players' secret win clauses are
