I have just sent everyone the following message, outlining some specific rules for this particular mafia game. Please respond to the PM with confirmation that you will accept the rules. Hopefully, roles will be assigned and distributed in about 10 hours. Signups are still open until then
Welcome to The Dark, a mystery-themed mafia game of detective-work, social deduction, co-operation, deception, and betrayal!
The game has not started yet but since this particular mafia game will be unique in several ways, I am sending this PM to all players by way of preparation
If you have played a mafia game here on Dominating12, you may disregard the following spoiler:
In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.
At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.
The game has two phases, the first of which is Day. Phases usually last 24hrs each. During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Players vote in the forum thread for someone they think is Mafia (e.g. #Lynch Virtuosity98); the player who gets voted the most is lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it becomes Night.
During the Night, night actions may be used by roles known as "Power Roles". Night actions are almost always carried out in each player's Role PM chat with the hosting player (e.g. Hi mr/mrs hosting player, tonight I think I'm going to #Kill Virtuosity98). These roles will be given to certain players in their Role PMs and will help them achieve their win clause for their faction. At night, mafia is also usually allowed a kill, so in effect, town gets a kill during the day, and mafia gets one at night. Often, there are also other night killing roles that are not necessarily mafia - those are usually reserved for more complex games.
The game alternates between Day and Night until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else (or nothing can prevent the same). In more complex games, other factions with differing win clauses may be included.
Keep in mind that deception, deceit, and lying are not only allowed, but encouraged and expected. Be careful who you give information to, and don't hesitate to ask a moderator for help!
Because this game has a unique format, I'm asking for
all players to confirm that they understand and will keep the following rules during the course of the game:
1. No outside communication.
Do not create any message threads to any other player involved in the game. Do not discuss the game outside of the forum thread.
I will create all necessary messaging threads. Editing posts or changing profile pictures and signatures is not allowed once the game has started.
2.
No copying/pasting (or reproducing in any other way)
messages from Virtuosity98. You may rephrase them, but no quoting. This is to avoid players being able to 'prove' their roles with undeniable evidence. Exception: quotation boxes starting with a puzzle piece symbol may be directly quoted:
3.
No posting if you are dead. There are lots of players and the thread needs to stay uncluttered.
No creating discussion threads for dead players - again I will take care of that (I have a themed welcoming message that I'm rather proud of
).
4. No inactivity. Minimalistic posting is a valid strategy, but in this game
all living players must at least submit a lynch vote during each Day phase. Lynch votes should be in the following formats:
#Lynch Virtuosity98,
#No Lynch, or #Abstain.
5. No bribing or betting. Every claim/alliance must bear equal weighting - words and honour will be your only bargaining chips!
Players in breach of these rules will be subject to penalties ranging from loss of night action to complete removal from the game, at my discretion. Please confirm that you have understood and accept rules 1-5 above. Sorry for the boring admin message
I'm looking forward to a fun game! If you have any questions throughout the game, please send them to me here in this Role PM thread
