Riddle

I'm completely stuck with CBT's riddle - even after his giveaway!! - I think another clue is needed. I hope nobody minds me starting a new riddle even though CBT's is unsolved at the moment.

I made this one up - it is 100% my own riddle and not based on or inspired by any other riddle. I hope it's [i]very[/i] difficult! ^^ [i][b]RIDDLE:[/b][/i] I am a building block, used to construct larger things, yet of these very building blocks am I built. I have many shapes and sizes. I can be thick or thin. I can be many colours. I have no wings, yet I fly to far fields. I have no arms, yet I bear heavy burdens. I have no tongue, yet I tell of terrible ancient tales. I am sometimes deposited in various locations, but in these locations I reside for only a short time. In one of my forms, you will see me and recognise me. In another of my forms, you will see me without recognition. I am unknown in another of my forms. I can be very comforting, but also very unpleasant. My appearance is often awaited, even when I am present in abundance. What am I?

Stone?

Virtuosity.. [spoiler]Foundation. It's a building block used to construct larger things. Different houses are different shapes and sizes so this is different shapes and sizes. "[i]I can be many colours[/i]" Well you can spray paint it? The wings bit is confusing. A foundation carries the burden of a house on it's back. And if it's the foundation of a pyramid it can tell of ancient tales. Deposited in various locations? that's the cement being poured into a place and it (I don't know how it works) cools into the foundation. The only forms I can think of is cement and the foundation. "[i]I can be very comforting, but also very unpleasant[/i]" means that it's comforting to know that your house won't fall over but if you stick your fingers in the gooey cement it's rather unpleasant. Generally we don't think about the cement under our feet but it is there in abundance.[/spoiler]

Its appearance is not often awaited (maybe "extremely rarely awaited ^^" ). How does cement "tell of terrible ancient tales"? Cement cannot be many colours - even when painted, whilst the paint is coloured the cement itself is still grey.[/spoiler]

Atoms are a type of building block, but they are not made of atoms (of these very building blocks am I built). I don't think you can get a thick atom ;D [/spoiler]

I have many shapes and sizes. I can be thick or thin. I can be many colours. -All of these may be reference to graphite/diamond and colored diamonds. I have no wings, yet I fly to far fields. -When in gaseous molecules, it can fly very far. I have no arms, yet I bear heavy burdens. -Natural diamonds form at very high pressures and temperatures. I have no tongue, yet I tell of terrible ancient tales. -14C is used to date organic samples. I am sometimes deposited in various locations, but in these locations I reside for only a short time. -Deposited carbon is transformed in CO2 by some organisms. In one of my forms, you will see me and recognise me. In another of my forms, you will see me without recognition. I am unknown in another of my forms. -We can detect 14C with radiotechniques, and we know 12C is everywhere even when we cannot individually recognise it. 21C is an isotope with a mean life shorter than 30 ns, so I assume that it's never been seen, so unknown, even when its existence is proven. I can be very comforting, but also very unpleasant. -CO2 has been used as anaestethic, but CO smells like rotten eggs. My appearance is often awaited, even when I am present in abundance. -People search for carbon beyond the earth, but it's difficult for us to get there and find it, even when in abundance. [/spoiler]
