It looks like a lot of hard work, and I wouldn't do it any justice on any level, graphics or otherwise at this point. I'll keep practising with it though and use all the above info. I'd be keen to see anyones other maps (old maps/rejected maps/practice pas etc) outta curiousity.

@Hoodlum go to the Map Progress page currently still called Map Queue http://www.dominating12.com/forum/?cmd=topic&act=view&id=1580&board=43&page=1 and there are links to most of the rejected / aborted maps.
All completed ones disappear from the list of course as they are live maps. You will see that your 'Map Dabble' is under Map Ideas / Trials.

I will eventually make a list of the links to the completed map threads because it is now apparent that this would be a handy reference for budding map makers. This one will be linked to the first post so that the progression process can be viewed.

sweetpuppy, you asked for names of stores. Now i dont know if u play video games, but u could use names originating from the grand theft auto series, as they r often funny variations of more or less well-known real life chains. it would also give a nice nerdy nod to vid game players. Alsom maybe stores from Dead Rising (xbox game), although i cant actually remember if they that good. anyways there r plenty of vid game stores that would be instantly recognizeable for many? people.
If not i would go for at least some big real life US stores as most people actually know them, and maybe make up some wacky ones

also OPEC Donation center, Federation of Russian Republics information, UN information center, swedish embassy, republican HQ,...basically something more or less everybody can relate to for bad or good

Hello, I have an idea of making a Russian Federation Map. (Or Russia in general, same thing). I would be willing to work on it, mostly or all by myself, but have not done anything like this before, and would likely need some guidance. I do not know if this has been suggested before, sorry for not reading through 380 comments. :D

Anyways, if you look, there are already regions in Russia. (Link below). Some of these regions will need to be changed to make the map playable. For example, Far East, the yellow region, couldn't have such a large territory, making it a power house if you do the Bonus = # of territories/3 + # of defending territories/2.5 rule. I would first like to have some insight on what people's thoughts are of how the map looks, and just general comments. I can make this a thread, but wanted to check here first. Thanks for reading, comments and suggestions welcomed!

First of all, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! For using the correct procedure right from the start.

This actually looks a very interesting map for a game-map.
It's a bit Linear in the central/east part of the map, but it would no doubt need connections to the west anyway and this can be averted by either connection lines or ports.

I notice you say you have never done anything like this before, but if you know your way around a good graphics package and are willing to work with the feedback to develop the map, I see no reason why you should not try to make the map yourself.
If you need assistance or information, there are cartographers here that will help at any time.

Please bare in mind that you should read the whole DXII Guide to Map Making and the Example First Post threads before starting the map.
Also there is lots of helpful information on the Map Tutorials & Guides resource thread.

Good luck!

What about a Great Lakes map?
Spoiler (click to show)

I've never imbedded a map before so here's the link anyhow lol http://www.epa.gov/greatlakes/images/glbasin-large.png

Anywho, depending on how it was structured, it'd be pretty fun to move around on. Maybe only way to attack is through the lakes, either with ports or just making the lakes have territories themselves (US extends county borders into lakes anyhow). Limit the contiguity of the land territories, like this map does. I just think it'd make for interesting gameplay.

Plus it could build up some good US/Canada synergy :P

Looks great!
If you ignore the bold black county lines and focus on the thinner territory lines, it looks like this map is half-made!

Do you plan on having the USA & Canadian territories all in the game map? If so, I think this would make the game play and shape much better.
This could be one of the large maps we so urgently need.

The_Bishop still has an outstanding ATOM map of Australia which has been in the making for many years (see Map Progress). I was always hoping he would change his idea into a bigger map, but hey we could have an Australia map as well, because his is called ATOM.

Honestly I don't know... You could really structure the region however you wanted. I'd probably include all the US counties already shown, although I'd probably group them differently into territories, and throw in the counties for southern Ontario as well, but Northern Ontario only has like 5 counties, so I'd use something like the ones on this map to break it up.

But I think it'd be possible to do the whole surrounding region as well, not just limit it to the counties/regions closest to the lakes, like this map. So it'd be Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and then Ontario. I think that would be kind of fun too.

I just thought that playing around the lakes would make it a bit more interesting, since the center of the map is void.

I'd like to know other peoples thoughts/ideas about it though.

Drop Map

I am thinking along the terms of randomness / puzzle / labyrinth (fog of war)

Cartographers/map makers come up with several designs of quarter maps which all puzzle together by whatever dimensions eg: 1024/2 = 512 width and whatever the height is. with fixed links to go n/s/e/w. So there could be a multiple combinations of pieces that fit together in this idea. The map drop would be as random as the troop drop.
The background would be all the same for looks as would the color schemes selected for regions in each corner, perhaps this bit needs some thinking (each corner piece created may need to be re-created in diff colors)
instead of a minimap the bonuses are displayed on the corner piece maps. Fog of war settings would get interesting.
I suppose it would just mean that all these layer combinations possibilities are made up in the db, and a default map is displayed when created and waiting for players.

On launch a random map is dropped.

I think it could be fun for map makers to come up with these cornerpieces for some interesting looking maps :)

Sounds reaaaaly cool but I'm not sure how it would be possible to program the connections between randomly placed tiles of the map.
