I have looked into the Lord of the Rings map a lot, because I was actually planning to make one, because it would be just one awesome map. Matty and I actually already had de basic outlines done (just a sketch, nothing fancy), but when looking around on the internet, I became more and more sure it is not going to happen, because it is not allowed. So yeah, you could send a letter (to Middle Earth enterprises I think), but I highly doubt if they will actually give permission to use it.

No I don't believe they would allow a Middle Earth map to be made Cireon. I really don't think they would allow it to be made on our site especially because we are such a low key site. They would more than likely want some kind of reimbursement for us using their map and we do not have that kind of money.

We may possibly be able to work around that type of restricition though if we could maybe stick with the theme of The Lord of the Rings but make some significant changes to the type of gameplay and a few changes to the territories. Possibly changing the names of the territories and how they are placed on the map.

That is my idea also...but how could you then have a LOTR map?

Well we can't thats the problem. It can not be recognized in any context as having any affiliation with that franchise. So in essence it is not possible.

What do you cartographers think of creating a map where bonuses are determined by the chaining of territories together? In other words, there would be no such thing as fixed countries. Instead, a country's size and bonus structure can be built up organically by how well a player can hold artificial boundaries. Bonus totals could be determined by the shaping of chained territories. Certain shapes, in random locations, can acquire a point bonus.

Wow!!! I like it! Programming is the only problem. I sometimes like where your mind goes...How about helping me with the caps on Westeros? You do have a Eye for it.

I also worry that the map would need to be a uniform grid. I wonder if there is a creative way to make it aesthetically appealing and have malleable country formations. I will think on this...

I think that the map would have to be an ocean grid full of territory shapes that appear as water until someone places armies in the location. Once armies are placed, the whole section could convert to land. Do you think this is a possibility? It seems like it would take the layering of two maps, one land, and one ocean, or some sort of placement/replacement rule. I don't know anything about the programming components, so this may be outside of possibility.

I gave them a map Idea also of unlocking after you kill everybody on a west map then you move to a second map.  Then winner of the east map moves to the second map. Then the two players fight it out to be the winner. Almost the same programing.
Not comment on that one also.
So is it possible...they know! Matty, Glanru and Vexer.

I think the programming challenges are too big for the rewards it gives us at this particular moment. Other programming tasks have priority over new gameplay types in my opinion. But keep it into your head. Maybe, one day, there is time to add this. I will try and think about some tricks how we might add this without much/any programming, but that will probably be very hard.

what if instead of moving to a different map how about something like this: we could have a map with a set a small islands, probably something like 5 territories each, and maybe something like 5 of them in a circle and in the center is a big island maybe twice the size of the others. and have the middle island all neutral and it has a big bonus for capturing it. but to go to the big island you have to conquer a small island before moving your troops to the big one? it make some interesting gameplay.

Well, it would be more interesting to do the inside of the castle too, so it would become quite similar to the house map I think.

Also, copyright issues. We can't just use the names without asking for permission.
