Here's my take on Atlantis.
It was discovered first by sailing west from the Pillars of Hercules, then lost in History due to no accurate Map References at a time when distance east - west was difficult to judge due to no way to measure Longitude. The early ships got into strong fast currents that got them to South America quickly and judged the distance traveled on the time taken to sail it.
This put South America (Atlantis), then believed to be an island (not even including North America) in a perceived position of the centre of the modern Atlantic Ocean.
Later explorers such as Americo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus used more accurate measurements and sailed on different currents and mapped the lands they visited and placed the only land they found, much further across the Atlantic Ocean and therefore placed the earlier named Atlantis in its correct place. However, the mix of early placement judgement and mapping and the later more accurate placement and mapping, led to fables of the land being lost in the Atlantic, submerged by the Gods and various other things that led to the modern fable of Atlantis.
It was however, very aptly named as Atlantis by the Aztecs, meaning Water of Copper (modern translation) Water of Gold (Ancient), with the ancient one being the most accurate initially, when it was found that the land produced more Gold than any other metals. However, later they learned to the contrary when they cleared the jungles and learned to mine for metals.
So, my 10 second summary on Atlantis is; they called South America, "Atlantis", believed it to be an island. It had some ancient Aztec cities and lots of Gold and early explorers placed it too far east creating the modern fable of a lost sunken city.
