Also, thanks again to Bischop and Rockwert for the feedback. I experimented a bit more with the background and tried to make it look like the map is actually lying on a table. I made both a grey version and a brownish version.
Not sure if it really looks better, though. Personally, I prefer the grey version because I think the colors fit together more naturally in most cases.
That said, you barely even see the table most of the time anyway. Italy and South America are kind of exceptions since there’s a larger visible area of the table there.
So overall, I’d probably go with the grey version.
