Imagine how many new players (possible future friends, future programmers, future map makers) came here, clicked on a live game to join and played an unbeatable (Basic) player in a Same Time game, not at all aware that this is neither the way Risk is really played nor that other 'Basic Players' aren't this good and then thought "this game sucks, I'll try a different site"!

This.

When I first came to this site, after my first favorite risk site stopped running, I ran into a few of these games, and I almost did not stay with d12 because of this. If I had seen he was a higher rank and not basic, I probably would have been much less discouraged.

is that not the point?... do you think martin luther king should not have just accpted things has the way they were instead of making a statement?

at lest im getting a gold star for my effort.

My point is that by buying the rank of private, you'd be able to easily achieve the same effect as having that basic rank. As it is now, Vexer's given you a label which allows other players to recognize you as a better player than you appear. The fact that you want to keep it seems to imply that you care more about the statement your rank makes rather than its actual effect.

if i cared to make a statement about my rank i would have show it was i was a general.. i play this for myself; therefore only myself needs to know my rank. Life i agree it would not hurt to buy the next up rank. I think this whole thing is a slippery-slope... what stopping the next "unranked player" movement targeting all players who show a rank less then what it actually is, in that case dont put the rank in to the player control at all. This site has allowed players to be in control of there rank and now starting to push players that should be up the ladder.

So sure i could just give in and buy a private rank... or it can be automatically done. I dont understand why you give people the choice but have instituted a half measure.. why not just do it.

Now iI'm for unanimity when it comes to rank, i would rather all ranks be unknown and i would also rather every one who joins a game to play there turns.. but that will never happen. This site is looking to evolve, and for the most part it takes the vote and ideas for the general playing public.

If more would rather institute a automatic rank up lets vote it, if it wins, great I will give in. If it loses, great I will agree with it. Whats the best way to vote it fairly... not enough viewers in the forum is to it. Is there a way to make a message the goes to all active players and get them to reply yes or no.. get 2-3 different players calculate the outcome and then do what the majority wants.
But if this site is not a democracy put it on the owners head and make it what ever he/she wants, their sites their rules.

I think we will eventually have an automatic system that prompts you to rank up when you have earned a new rank but will let you defer it for a couple ranks for those players who don't want to rank up simply because they are afraid they will lose the rank in their next game.

To do this we first need token reform; something the staff have been discussing recently because I think that a semi-automatic rank system would work smoother without the complication of token requirements. We have other ideas for tokens that will make them very relevant to all non premium players.

@Vexer, I like the new rank (it's kinda spiffy) and the idea of tokens being useful is intriguing. However, I think mandatory, semi-automatic rank would be the beginning of my end here. I do not want to be burdened with the persistent obsession with rank, as I mentioned in the "How do ranks help you?" thread.
I will say this, for those of you so painfully curious over the rank for which I am qualified (let me check...ok)...

For many Unranked Players, that is the exact scenario.
I don't see how this is any better or worse than experienced players farming noobs (in "Same Time" or any other gametype) ;)
As far as davidechko123 playing the games he enjoys, why are you or anyone else worried about it? You say "Imagine a D12 where you can't deceive!" but I would counter, "Imagine a D12 without rank, where everyone plays for the fun and camaraderie of the game!"

Suggestions for new rank icons...

Just my 2 cents :D

BTW with all the new and exciting changes and "improvements" around here, I hope one of them will finally result in the removal of the necessity for passwords on Advanced Increasing cards games (it has been 6 months+) The "confusion" will be negligible thanks to Join Tab and clear description of the option in the News.

Contrary to beliefs (both popular and unpopular), I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE the good work that the Staff here does. Thank You ALL :D (especially for the "Invite" button:))

Have fun :D

Spammy, I still don't understand why simply displaying your rank would force you to start caring about it. You've told us how many points you have, so whats the big deal with an automatic ranking system? It won't give away any more information than you already have.

I actually do like the new rank insignia :)

Here (in this thread) it is relevant, in games etc. not so much.

It's a little bit funny to me that rank, which is so volatile, is valued above skill points or even reputation.
Normally, when I start inviting to a game, I look for players with whom I have played before and when that fails to fill a game, I look to the Skill Points of the Online players. Rank seems far more fickle than the skill points.

That reminds me of a question. For quite some time (days, at least) elmar was ranked at 2nd LT with 0 Skill Points. How is that even possible?

emjaydee wrote:
Elmar's join date was 03rd May. He played a lot of same-time games in May and ranked up. As the skill points aren't updated until Vexer does the D12 list, he had a high rank but no skill points.

BTW@spamfree want to play a public mocking game, bring it on?!

1775 games and only ever got to maximum 1800 points? Starting at 1000 points if my memory serves me right, in 1775 games you acquired the growth of between 150 & 800 points! No wonder you don't see rank like others do, it's a symbol of your achievements, abilities and length of service here. I lost more than 3 times more than you've ever gained by a run of bad luck over 3 weeks.

BTW you never ever read the threads before some comments to know what is meant when stated, or what they are in regard / reply to.
SpamFree wrote:
@tramadol, not sure why a mocking game would even come about. Did you somehow feel mocked? That was not my intent.

Well, I hope your luck gets better. It's obviously very important to many here.

Have fun :)

People have the right to choose, since when did D12 become Big Brother? I understand why people don't want to rank up, I understand why others do. Why force your opinion on anyone else, let them choose.

This is a game, lets enjoy it.

I think just publicly display the point each people have in the profile same as skills point is currently displayed (and USELESS IMO)

Then players can choose to buy rank or not
