Riddle

Riddle:
There is a town with a power outage so all the streetlights are not working and the houses have no lights at all inside(no flashlights or candles) A car drives by with both of its headlights broken and there are no lights on inside the car and the guy driving doesn't have a flashlight. A black dog is lying on the ground in the road and the guys swerves out of the way as to not hit the dog. How did he know the dog was there? (The dog did not bark and there is not a full moon )
