No, chat is a vital part of the game, but in the fun part and in the strategy (manipulation) part.

If you want to ignore the chat just click on any of the other tabs ie:game log tab.
If you don't want to chat, you dont have to.

Just be sure to check on it now and then. Sometimes issues regarding the game, e.g increasing time, ending it, etc is decided via the game-chat.
