Resigning in an assassination game will be unfair, no matter what.
If he stays alive indefinitely, it's unfair because he won't grow stronger, so in the end you'll have a way easier target then all the others. If he leaves early, it's unfair as you might get a stronger target.
I guess the answer here is that in big games, if your target is a newbie, it's best to not let him know that he's your target. Though I realise that's not a very good answer.
