alright, i have some more versions:

None of them has inverted color. My fav is 3, also 4 and 5. I think if the colors become too bright and less grayish, then the visibility of background images vanishes and they start to become unrecognizible.

ignore the dots, writing and frame, i can change all of this independently.

Among those 5 I would probably vote for #2.
But I would like to propose #6, which is Dima's current version, with only the frame changed:
Trails #6 (click to show)

A grayish map with a bright frame, I think it was what Glanru attempted to do...
(I have also made the frame a bit more tridimensional using shadows)

Ehm yes, I know, now you have many different opinions and you cannot satisfy everybody.
Initially I was favourable to brighter colors, then I changed my mind. I felt like I had to try and show it.
Anyway, whatever will be decided will be fine for me.

Perhaps begin changing it Dima, so we can see how it looks in the games. Test different versions. When we change only the graphics games are not compromised.

Yeah nice,.. but honestly I would like to see the whole map on the thumbnail.
We have made a 'zoom-in' for the River Basins thumbnail, but it was exceptional.

Ah yes @Dima, even better now because you managed to include the whole frame in the thumbnail, good take!

As for the colors: you passed from very dark to very bright, I dunno what to say now... Maybe Hoodlum has ideas.

The way the trails meet just west of Fort Hall suggests to me that Boise is connected to Humboldt River or Salt Lake. But during gameplay those connections don't exist. Don't know which is correct/better.

I liked the darker map better for the mood/theme, but can see the need for less dimness. But now it's maybe too...something...psychedelic?trippy?dayglo?

i probably wouldn't play the map myself, the gameplay doesn't interest me that much the same as Brecourt Manor. but i appreciate the theme and most of the versions u guys have come up with seem fine to me, i just had a negative opinion the dark and gloomy version which wasn't better than the original. i thought the original looked nice enough to input, i wasn't sure what the hold up was with it back in the day. because it was someone elses map/art (glanru), and it already looks good, and it isn't a map im interested in playing as a player, im undecided and will go with almost anything except too dark or too cheesy bright

LoL.. Yes, quite trippy! :D

Personally I like maps without bonuses, especially for head-to-head games, it's like pure positional strategy. I played this one only once atm though. The "night effect" was nice, a cool feeling when playing it, but from a broader point of view, yes, the map was too dark. When you looked at our map list it was just like a dark gray rectangle. The original one from Glanru was extremely pale instead, not good either. And another problem with Glanru's version is that several connections were questionable.

@Dima, perhaps you should try small changes instead of jumping from one style to the opposite. I would suggest let's try to go back to the dark one, but just a bit less dark and with a bit more of colors (saturation). The frame instead may be much brighter than the rest, in my opinion, because it is not part of the "night picture". Well and good idea to include the whole frame in the thumbnail, already said it.

Not bad now, but too pale in my opinion.
